The Resurrection

. . . and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.

The early church celebrated Easter on the eve of the resurrection. The Scripture readings which were used emphasized deliverance, salvation, and redemption. New members, wearing white robes, were baptized and received. Old members renewed their commitment. Then the Lord’s Supper was observed. Because the timing of the celebration ushered in the new day, these services were the forerunners of today’s sunrise services. The white robes, symbolic of purity, are carried over in the pulpit hangings and clergy stoles used today in mainline churches.

Paul, in this passage, stresses the evidence of eyewitnesses to the resurrection, including himself. This event is the basis for Christianity. If Christ is not risen, then everything Christ said, and everything we say about him, is a lie. Among those to whom Jesus appeared were: Peter, who had denied him; James, the brother of Jesus, who had once declared him insane; and Paul, who had actively persecuted the followers of Jesus. None of these was expecting a resurrection, and it changed their lives.

These appearances remind us that Easter is not about an abstract idea. It is an event that can affect our daily lives. New life is possible, as it was for those to whom Christ first appeared.

For Reflection: What do I believe about the resurrection?

Prayer Seed:

We praise Thee, O God, for the Son of Thy love,
For Jesus who died and is now gone above,
Hallelujah! Thine the glory; Revive us again.
