Walking with Jesus

Reading: Luke 24:13-35

Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road?

The United Methodist Church has developed an inter-denominational experience called the "Walk to Emmaus.” Men and women spend separate weekends examining various aspects of their Christian lives. Their “eyes are opened” to a new relationship with Jesus Christ.

This is what happened to these disciples on the seven-mile road home from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Sad and discouraged, they were joined by a stranger. Together they talked of the recent events in the city and of their meaning. The stranger interpreted some of the scriptures to help them understand the experience. It was only as they broke bread together that they recognized the One who had journeyed with them. Then the disciples hurried back to share the good news in Jerusalem. Disappointment had turned to joy.

There is a clear message here for us. We need to be aware that we are walking with Jesus, the only one who can help us make sense of the experiences of life. When our focus changes from our own thoughts and concerns to the teaching of our Companion, new possibilities open before us. We also are expected to share our knowledge and understanding with others. Good news must always be passed on to others.

For Reflection: Am I aware of Jesus’ walk with me?

Prayer Seed:

Christ of the upward way, My guide divine,
Where you have set your feet may I place mine;
And move and march wherever you have trod,
Keeping face forward up the hill of God.
