Saying Thank You

It was kind of you to share my distress.
— Philippians 4:14 (NRSV)

How often have we postponed writing a thank you note? Sometimes we procrastinate until it no longer seems feasible to send the letter.

Paul can teach us some lessons about gratitude. The whole letter to the Philippians is full of love, joy, and thankfulness. Here Paul comes to the subject of a gift given for his personal comfort. With his words of thanks come also expressions of affection.

It had evidently been some time since Paul had received anything from the church in Philippi. He carefully expresses his understanding that they had not forgotten him. They simply had no opportunity, or perhaps no messenger to send their gift. Mail and parcel services were not available in those days. Everything was carried by hand, by trusted couriers.

Paul tells his hearers that he has learned to be content with whatever is available. This does not mean that their gift is not important or appreciated. Through the gift, the Philippians have formed a partnership with Paul.

For Reflection: Is there someone who has gladdened your heart or enriched your life? Write them a thank you note today.

A Prayer Seed:

For all the blessings of the year,
For all the friends we hold so dear,
For peace on earth, both far and near,
We thank Thee, Lord.
