Make Me Trusting

Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

If God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
— Matthew 6:30 NRSV

A child looks to parents for everything. No child pretends to be self-sufficient. Because a child trusts that all needs will be met, life can be lived one day at a time, not regretting the past or worrying unduly about the future.

It is very easy to allow worries, fears, anxieties, and even our dreams about next week or next year to spoil our happiness today. We need to build on the past and plan for the future, but meanwhile, if we trust a loving God we can live today to the fullest.

God can be trusted for our daily needs. We are taught to ask for daily bread. “If sinful persons like yourselves give children what they need, don’t you realize your Heavenly Father will do at least as much?” (Matthew 7:11)

God can be trusted for our salvation, yet we still try to earn it. “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling.”

God can be trusted with our future. We would like to have a blueprint of God’s long-range plans. “I do not ask to see the distant scene - one step enough for me.”

For Reflection: Do I really trust God?

A Prayer Seed:

Simply trusting ev’ry day, Trusting through a stormy way;
Even when my faith is small, Trusting Jesus, that is all.
Trusting as the moments fly, Trusting as the days go by;
Trusting Him whate’er befall, Trusting Jesus, that is all.
Edgar P. Stites, 1876
