Messages of Snow
5. Be Ready!
Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
Be Thou our Guard while life shall last.
Isaac Watts, 1719
Reading: Proverbs 31:10, 19-31
Whenever even a moderate snow is forecast by the meteorologists, people crowd the grocery stores to buy bread, milk, and toilet paper! They want to be prepared!
The virtuous woman of Proverbs 31 is always ready. When the snows of winter come, her family is snug and warm in the clothes she has woven and constructed for them.
"Into each life some rain (or snow) must fall." Jobs are lost. Family or friends die. Children disappoint us. Stock markets fail and financial resources disappear. Fire or flood may destroy our houses or businesses. Sickness comes.
We cannot always be physically prepared for the emergencies of life. Surely we can be ready spiritually by storing up "Soul food" for the lean times. We can feed on Bible verses or hymns of the church. Happy memories provide light in the dark hours. Faith and hope will convince us of God's loving care. All of these should be ready when emergencies require them. We cannot run out to buy them from the supermarket at the last minute. Putting something aside for a "snowy day" will equip us to survive.
