We’ve Come This Far by Faith

By faith Abraham obeyed . . . and he set out, not knowing where he was going.
— Hebrews 11:8 (NRSV)

A number of years ago we embarked on our own journey of faith, not knowing where we were going. At a time of great need, we were offered a temporary home in a largely African-American community. Future housing and occupation were unknown. What was obvious was God's presence.

Our first Sunday in worship with our new friends was a time of trepidation for us. We were not sure about our welcome. That all vanished when we sang together a gospel song that became our source of strength for the journey ahead, We've Come This Far by Faith. These folks, too, had suffered bad times and uncertainties, individually and as a congregation. We were together on the road.

God did not fail Abraham. God has never failed anyone who sincerely asked for guidance and strength. We are given whatever strength is needed for each stage of life. Troubles may not disappear, but the power to bear them will be provided.

We are no longer in that community, but we have carried away the warmth of their love, and the confidence of their faith as we continue our journey.

For Reflection: What sustains me when I do not know the way?

A Prayer Seed:

Don't be discouraged with trouble in your life,
He'll bear your burdens And move all misery and strife.
That's why we've come this far by faith
Leaning on the Lord; Trusting in His Holy Word,
He's never failed me yet.
Oh, can't turn around, We've come this far by faith.
