A Better Covenant

Reading: Hebrews 8:1-7

But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant . . .
— Hebrews 8:6 (NRSV)

We have come now to this writing which speaks of “a better covenant.” The old covenant made with Abraham promised a son and descendants, and a land. That covenant was often renewed with Israel, even though its condition, obedience to the Law, was never kept. Finally, the new covenant, promised through Jeremiah, was fulfilled in Jesus.

The better promises are not described for us in any detail. We do know that since Jesus is the one who fulfilled them, we can count on them. This is a sacrifice that never needs to be repeated. The primary purpose for both covenants was to provide a relationship with God. Jesus through his life and work has given us direct access to the presence of God. He is the bridge between us and God. This is the work of a mediator, to bring the estranged parties together.

The problem with the old covenant was not the law itself. It was the human frailty that kept people from ever perfectly obeying that law. The new covenant is a way to overcome that difficulty. Reviewing the covenants as we enter the season of Lent reminds us of the continuing love and grace of God which Jesus demonstrated so clearly.

For Reflection: What do I appreciate most about the New Covenant?

A Prayer Seed:

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide:
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessing all mine, with ten thousand beside.
Thomas Obediah Chisholm, 1923
