A Day of Silence
Reading: Isaiah 26:1-7
We are not certain what Jesus did on Wednesday. Perhaps he continued his teaching in the Temple. Many writers call this, “The Day of Silence.”
In the midst of a week of tumult, Jesus needed a day of rest and repose. Perhaps he stayed in that home in Bethany where his every need and comfort were of first importance. Or he may have gone into the hills to consider the eventful days just ended, and those to come.
Jesus had made a public declaration of his Messiahship. He had come into conflict with all the authorities, particularly the religious ones. Jesus knew where this course would lead him. He knew how soon the end would come.
It was a good time to draw apart, to contemplate his mission, or to reflect on his relationship with God. Jesus’ mind was always on God. He trusted God completely. Peace was a possibility for Jesus.
In the midst of Holy Week when we are becoming concerned about preparations for Easter clothing, Easter dinner, and Easter eggs, we need a time for silence and contemplation.
For Reflection: On what is my mind fixed today?
Prayer Seed:
Peace, perfect peace,
With sorrows surging round?
On Jesus’ bosom naught but calm is found.
