Light

Reading: John 9:1-12

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
— John 9:5 NRSV

Anyone who has ever experienced a black-out or walked on a street without lights understands what darkness is. Those who are blind live in permanent darkness. Jesus’ healing of the man born blind is a demonstration of God’s ability to deal with the dark places of our lives.

Most of us are not physically blind, but all of us have been spiritually blind. Jesus offers us his healing touch. We can become able to see the power of God. We can see the importance of a restored relationship with God. Jesus can give us the ability to see who he is. The man born blind was able to recognize Jesus first as a prophet, then as the Son of God. We can see the needs of others after we receive Jesus’ touch.

Note that Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world . . .” We must act while the opportunity is open to us. Our choice of Jesus as Lord cannot be postponed forever. Our service to others must be done as the need becomes visible to us. Waiting too long leads to disappointment, despair, and even defeat.

Jesus, the light, is waiting to heal our blindness and open our eyes to the glories of the Christian life.

For Reflection: Do I need more light in my spiritual life?

Prayer Seed:

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin;
The Light of the world is Jesus;
Like sunshine at noonday His glory shone in,
The Light of the world is Jesus.
Once I was blind, but now I can see the Light of the world is Jesus.
