What Do People Say?
Reading: Matthew 16:13-20
If you were to take a poll of your friends or co-workers about the person of Jesus, you would receive many responses. He would be described as a good man, a prophet, a caring person, a teacher of ethical behavior, a good example. Some would respond that Jesus is Savior or Son of God. A few might denounce him as a faker or a liar.
When Jesus asked his disciple the same question, he also received a variety of answers. It was important for Jesus to understand the impression he had made on his hearers, especially the disciples. In a short while they would go to Jerusalem, and Jesus would be crucified. What kind of witness would his followers make after his death? Did anyone recognize the importance of his mission?
Perhaps the disciples told Jesus only the good things others said: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or another prophet. Certainly, the religious leaders had other words: blasphemer, imposter, glutton, drunkard, sinner. We frequently say what we think is expected of us when asked important questions.
Knowing what the world thinks about Jesus may be useful on some occasions. It may help us understand where and how we need to preach the gospel.
For Reflection: Do I know what my friends think about Jesus?
Prayer Seed:
Jesus, the very thought of Thee with sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far Thy face to see, and in Thy presence rest.
Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153)
