What Do You Say?

Reading: Luke 9:18-22

But who do you say that I am?
— Luke 9:20a NRSV
Who Is.jpg

This is the most important question anyone will ever ask of you. Who is Jesus to you? It is always good to know what others think. Peter’s reply to the question is an example for us. But in the end, the only thing that matters is our personal response to Jesus.

Christianity is not about knowing the correct answers to questions concerning Jesus or his teachings. Christianity is knowing Jesus. What is our personal experience? Can the mission of Jesus continue on the basis of our testimony?

Just as it was the case with the disciples, we do not understand all that may be required of us as we follow Jesus. The important thing is to be willing to go with him to Jerusalem, or wherever we are called to learn and serve.

Jesus went on to teach the disciples, as he does us, that being God’s Messiah would require suffering and death. We never know what will be asked of us as modern disciples. We should be ready as the writer of the Hebrews said to “hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering.” (Hebrews 10:23 NRSV)

For Reflection: What is my response to, “Who do you say that I am?”

Prayer Seed:

My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine:
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
O let me from this day
Be wholly Thing!
