O Emmanuel

They shall name him Emmanuel, which means, ‘God is with us.’
— Matthew 1:23

The One whose coming into our world and our hearts, who is celebrated again and again, is none other than God. We do not have a distant God who cares nothing about us. Our God came to us in the form of a baby to show us what love really means.

We do not have to depend on visions or imagination to picture God. Human beings have actually seen God in Jesus Christ. When we are asked to describe God, we can only say, "Look at Jesus." He is the embodiment of the love, grace, and mercy of God. Jesus came to seek the lost, to comfort the frightened, to heal the sickness of soul and body.

What if we didn't know that God is with us? We might have wealth and power, beauty and fame, and all that the world can give, yet be desperately alone. Our God is here beside us, giving courage and love each day. In Jesus God shows us how human life was intended to be lived, by living it himself.

Our God came to assume the brokenness of our sins, to die on a Roman cross, to rise again to glory. This is a God who is involved in every facet of our lives.

Reflection: How does knowing God is with me change my life?

Prayer Seed:

O Emmanuel,
our Sovereign and Lawgiver,
desire of the nation and Savior of all:
come and save us, O Lord our God.
