3. Live on the Rock
The second little animal in our proverb is a grayish-brown creature with soft fur, sharp white teeth, and fourteen toes. It is called a coney or badger. The wisdom of this animal is displayed in its choice of home sites.
Are we as wise as the badgers? Where have we built our lives and looked for our security? Many people build on family, friends, money, youth, beauty, health, or popularity. If one or all of these were taken away, would life collapse for you?
A number of cities in the United States have houses built on the sides of mountains. They seem to be hanging right out in the air. The secret is in their foundations. They are anchored into the mountainside. Recent El Nino years have created mudslides which destroyed some of these homes. Nothing human is indestructible.
What does it take for us to be established forever? Obedience to Christ is the only sure foundation for life. It is Christ's promise that the life which is founded on obedience to him is safe, no matter what storms may come. Many do not have a solid and dependable faith because there is some area in which they are not willing to be obedient to the words of Christ.
For Reflection: On what is my life founded?
A Prayer Seed:
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in God’s excellent word!
What mroe can be said than to you God hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
