Bethany to Jerusalem
Reading: Luke 19:28-40
Each day of what we now call “Holy Week” brought Jesus one step closer to the climax of his earthly ministry, death on the cross. Where do we fit into the events of this week?
Sunday’s short journey from Bethany down the Mount of Olives and up to Jerusalem was a festive occasion. Great numbers of pilgrims were traveling to the city to celebrate the Passover. Many knew Jesus or had heard of his teaching and healing. Jesus had carefully planned a dramatic entrance to the city. He laid a clear choice before the people. Would they accept or reject him as Messiah?
The route from the Mount of Olives and the colt which had never been ridden were obvious references to prophecy. The crowd understood their significance, responding with garments strewn on the road. The words from Psalm 118 were always sung by pilgrims on their way to the feasts. This time they had additional Messianic importance.
The Pharisees also knew what was happening. They asked Jesus to calm the crowds, fearing an uprising would bring down the wrath of the Roman authorities. Unfortunately, the emotional enthusiasm of the crowd did not have deep roots. It was not a strong enough commitment to last through the week.
For Reflection: Where am I in this crowd?
Prayer Seed:
All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!
The people of the Hebrews with palms before Thee went;
Our praise and prayer and anthems before Thee we present.
