4. A Sense of Mission

You are . . . God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

You are important to God because you were created to fill a need in the world at this moment. The third sense we must recover is a sense of mission.

A missionary is someone who is sent, not necessarily to Africa, but possibly to a next-door neighbor. We do not have to declare God’s wonderful acts with words alone, but also by our actions. God has called us to share what we have received. It may be teaching ability, medical skill, a warm and friendly personality, cooking or sewing talents, musical abilities, or an ear willing to listen to another’s troubles and joys. If age or sickness limit our mobility, we can pray for those around us. If we want to go away from home, every denomination has a division of voluntary service. Doctors and nurses volunteer as substitutes for those needing a rest. Some retired people donate teaching, secretarial or administrative talents. Others with much love to give, serve as houseparents in boarding schools or homes for children. We have been called by God in order to serve.

For Reflection: To whom is God sending me?

A Prayer Seed:

Christ for the world we sing;
The world to Christ we bring
With loving zeal;
The poor and them that mourn,
the faint and overborne,
Sinsick and sorrow-worn,
Whom Christ doth heal.
Samuel Wolcott, 1869
